Kōrero: Missions and missionaries

Holy Communion, Taupō, 1842

Holy Communion, Taupō, 1842

This 1842 drawing is probably based on a sketch by George Selwyn, the Anglican Bishop of New Zealand. Two missionaries celebrate Holy Communion with the people of ‘Orona’ on the shore of Lake Taupō. Each missionary stands inside a small tent. Behind them a canoe has been converted into their altar by laying a white cloth over it. On the cloth stand the communion bread and wine.
