Pou tangata whenua

Ko te whakairo tuatahi ka kōrero mō Tarawa, i hoe tahi rāua ko tōna tuakana, teina rānei, a Tāwharanui i Hawaiki. Ka mau mai e rāua ā rāua tānahanaha (he momo ika ririki) mōkai, ka tuku ki tētahi puna iti. Nāwai, mōhiotia ai taua puna ko Ōpōtiki-mai-tawhiti, ‘ngā pōtiki mai i tawhiti’. Whāia, ka ingoatia te tāone o ēnei rā, ko Ōpōtiki. Ka whakaatu anō te whakairo i ngā waka heke e rua, a Te Arautauta me Te Tohorā.
