Kōrero: City boosters and promoters

New Plymouth, 1843

New Plymouth, 1843

In an effort to encourage people to immigrate, New Zealand Company publications described their new towns in the most glowing terms. Paintings were a powerful way of conveying this message. Here, New Plymouth is depicted as an idyllic town within a tamed rural landscape. The snow-capped Mt Taranaki in the background adds a hint of majesty to the scene. New immigrants often found life radically different once they arrived.
