Some people began to suggest that the tough conditions of the New Zealand frontier and the ‘bracing climate’ of the country were character forming. L. J. Kennaway wrote and illustrated a book, Crusts: a settler’s fare due south, in which he described the harsh conditions of looking after sheep in Canterbury in the 1870s. Here he depicts a rough colonial shelter in the rain.
