Kōrero: Rural clothing

Nelson, 1842

Nelson, 1842

Painted by John Waring Saxton in 1842, about a year after Nelson city was founded, this artwork shows settlers wearing smocks. In New Zealand the British smock quickly went out of favour, and men turned to more practical cotton shirts and Crimean shirts made of grey wool.
