This plate comes from An elementary manual of New Zealand entomology by George Hudson, published in London in 1892. The top two illustrations (1a and 1) are of tussock ringlet butterflies (Argyrophenga antipodum), which live in the South Island and in North Island mountains. The middle images show the larvae (2c and 2b), adults (2 and 2a) and pupae (2d and 2e) of the red admiral (Vanessa gonerilla gonerilla). At the bottom are the larva (3b) and male (3) and female adult (3a) of the common copper butterfly (Lycaena salustius). Common copper butterflies, for many years known for their highly variable forms, are now thought to be many different species.
