Locals at Ormond, founded as a military settlement, gather for a group photograph during a day of rifle-shooting in the late 19th century. The number of Pākehā in Poverty Bay grew rapidly in the 1870s, with government encouragement through the confiscation and purchase of Māori land, and the establishment of settlements.
