East Coast writers: David Ballantyne

David Ballantyne was raised partly in Hicks Bay and Gisborne. His autobiographical first novel, The Cunninghams (1948), presented a dysfunctional family living in mid-1930s Gisborne (‘Gladstone’ in the novel) through the eyes of a young adolescent. The book was first published in New York by Vanguard; the cover depicted here is from a reprint for the New Zealand market which Vanguard published in 1950.
