Dairy entrepreneur Thomas Joll is commemorated with this marble bust at Ōkaiawa’s Joll domain. Joll established a chain of privately owned dairy factories around Ōkaiawa in the 1880s. After his death the company became the T. L. Joll Co-operative. Over the next half-century it expanded to become one of the major dairy companies in South Taranaki. In 1963 the company amalgamated with its main competitor, the Kaūpokonui Dairy Co-operative, to form Kiwi Co-operative Dairies. In 1992 Kiwi Dairies merged with their north Taranaki equivalent, the Inglewood-based Moa-Nui Co-operative. This merger consolidated Taranaki’s dairy industry until the formation of the national dairy giant Fonterra in 2001.
