The small town of Manaia is the hub of a thriving bakery industry, and promotes itself as the ‘bread capital’. Alfred Yarrow originally began a family bakery in Turakina, south of Whanganui, but moved it to Manaia in 1923. In 2009 Yarrows Family Bakers employed more than 200 people in a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week operation. It supplied bread and frozen pastries around New Zealand, as well as to markets in the United States, the Pacific and South-East Asia.
