In 1947–49 the eight huge Haparangi-class ships were built, forming the backbone of the combined New Zealand Shipping Company–Federal Steam Navigation Company fleets. Below decks, a maze of holds stored refrigerated, chilled or general cargo, all meticulously organised to avoid having to restow it as the ships worked their way around the ports. As for the accommodation, height went with status: the captain had the boat deck, the officers had the promenade deck beneath him, and they in turn lorded it over the ordinary seamen, most of whom had to share twin-berth cabins. Crew departments ate separately.
