In 1911 Mākereti (Maggie) Papakura's troupe of Te Arawa performers were invited to set up a Māori village at the Festival of Empire exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London. Villages of exotic peoples were a feature of international exhibitions at this time and the Māori village was promoted as a headline act. However, the authorities condemned the village as a fire danger, so the Te Arawa group moved to White City, where the Coronation Exhibition was in full swing. After White City closed, the performers were invited back in September to perform at the Crystal Palace Theatre. This advertisement presents their programme.
