Old technologies that anticipate the characteristics of electronic arts have become important reference points for media artists, just as traditional media have also begun to reference new technologies. Stella Brennan’s 'Tuesday, 3 July 2001, 10.38 am' (2001–2) uses the pixelated grid of needlepoint embroidery to depict a computer’s desktop display. It took a year and a sewing circle of family and friends to make the artwork. By the time it was done Brennan had a new computer with a new operating system and a different desktop.
