The New Zealand Journal

This is the cover of the first issue of New Zealand's first periodical, the New Zealand Journal, published on 8 February 1840. It was a mouthpiece for the New Zealand Company, and copies were sent back to Britain to promote the company and immigration to its settlements. The publication provided a generally positive outlook on early colonial life, but did not back away from mentioning some of the frustrations and hardships. The provenance of the map is unknown.
