Scotsman Duncan MacGregor was appointed professor of mental and moral philosophy at the University of Otago in 1871, the year it opened, and was one of the university's three foundation professors. Mental philosopy entailed the study of psychology, ethics and logic. In 1886 he resigned his chair to become inspector of lunatic asylums and inspector of hospitals and charitable institutions.
