Comment began in 1959 with the aim of being 'a place for discussion', as the editorial of the first issue explains. The goal was for a periodical 'where the analysis of the intellectual coheres with the immediate concern of the citizen'. Most of the content was about current affairs, but it was supplemented by reviews of books, music and drama. Many of the contributors were academics, a group that grew as universities expanded in number and size during the 1960s and 1970s.
