Kōrero: Sport and the nation

The Native rugby team playing Surrey, 1888

This full-page series of illustrations appeared in The Illustrated London News in October 1888. It showed scenes from the first match played in England by the New Zealand Native rugby team. The artist clearly was interested in the exotic 'Māori' aspect of the tour, which helped establish the place of Māori ritual and participation in New Zealand sport.
