In November 1887 the students of Dunedin gymnastics teacher 'Professor' Oscar David held a benefit exhibition for him. This poster, which advertises the event, includes illustrations of various gym activities: vaulting over a horse; leaping over a high jump bar; climbing and descending a rope; exercising with weights; performing routines with Roman rings and on horizontal bars and parallel bars; fencing and boxing. It also shows women exercising to music.
