Joseph Lowe, the third generation of his family to teach dance in their native Scotland, migrated to the southern hemisphere in the mid-19th century. Lowe (and later two of his children) shifted between New Zealand and Australia, teaching dance in both countries. The family built up a large collection of dance books and memorabilia, including the teacher’s manual shown here, with its instructions for Del Caro’s hornpipe.
