Food manufacturer Sanitarium opened vegetarian cafés in the early 1900s. The Health Food Café in central Auckland offered a three-course dinner with cereal coffee in the middle of the day. They also served lighter lunches comprising things like wheatmeal bread, graham rolls, scones and buns, all washed down with cereal tea. The menu is rather sparse and those who were particularly hungry but with less concern for health would probably have gone elsewhere.
