Kōrero: Drugs

This advertisement was typical of many that appeared in New Zealand newspapers and, as in this case, in catalogues of pharmacy products from the 1860s until the first decade of the 20th century. Chlorodyne included both opium and cannabis, and was promoted as a cure for many medical problems. There were two brands of Chlorodyne, one produced by J. T. Davenport using J. Collis Browne's recipe and another using a recipe of Richard Freeman. There were a number of court cases in Britain which attempted to establish which was the original and genuine Chlorodyne. Both brands sold large quantities in New Zealand.
