Kōrero: Sport and society

This plan of Hagley Park shows the grounds set aside in 1854 for public recreation, close to the city centre. By the 1890s, when this plan was drawn up by the Department of Lands and Survey, north Hagley Park was used for football grounds while the southern part had cricket pitches. The park was named after the ancestral home of the Lyttelton family.
