Military displays and competitions, Newtown Park, 1891

This advertisement promotes military displays and competitions to be held at Newtown Park, Wellington, on 11 April 1891. The competitions all reflect skills in horsemanship or use of weapons, developed in training for combat. The volunteer movement was widespread in late-19th-century New Zealand. Volunteers held military tournaments such as this one, and sometimes entered teams in local sporting events.
