A colonial treasurer could acknowledge the ‘unselfish and untiring assiduity, and remarkable ability, of the officers of the Treasury department’ (Julius Vogel in 1869), but as these pages from papers assembled by Treasurer William Fitzherbert for the 1867 financial statement indicate, treasurers themselves were also deeply involved, as they were responsible for the presentation of accounts.
