Proclamation establishing the New Zealand Police Force, 1886

This grandly worded document, sealed with wax and ribbon, is the proclamation declaring that ‘the Police Force Act 1886 shall come into force on the 1st day of September next.’ It is signed by William Jervois, the governor of New Zealand from 1883 to 1889. There is a covering note from Defence Minister John Ballance (who was later premier). The act split the New Zealand Constabulary Force, which had combined police and military functions, into the New Zealand Police Force and the Permanent Militia (the army).
