Special gatherings of children were a feature of royal tours. This one took place outside Parliament in 1927 for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York (later George VI and Queen Elizabeth). School children, equipped with small flags, were also marshalled along routes or approaches. When the Prince of Wales arrived in Wellington in 1920, for example, children lining Oriental Bay cheered and waved flags as his ship rounded Point Jemingham.
