Kōrero: Marriage and partnering

Wedding invitation, 1895

An invitation to the marriage of Julia Thorne George and W. B. Colbeck, to be celebrated on 26 June 1895, was sent to Sir George Grey, formerly governor of New Zealand. As was then usual, the bride's mother and father – Mr and Mrs Seymour Thorne George – were identified with the father's name only. The custom reflected the absorbing of a married woman's legal identity into that of her husband.
