Kōrero: Population change

Shoe-factory staff, Wellington, 1930s

Urbanisation in New Zealand was influenced by labour-force distribution. Pākehā workers were increasingly employed in the urban-based secondary (manufacturing) and tertiary (service) sectors. These were larger than the rural-based primary (farming, forestry and mining) sector in employment terms by the 1920s. These people worked for shoe manufacturer R. Hannah and Co. in Wellington in the 1930s.
