Kōrero: Ethnic and religious intolerance

This map dates from the late 1860s. The blue boundaries, which were added later, show the major areas of land confiscated by the government after the New Zealand wars. They do not show smaller parcels of land that were confiscated elsewhere. Most of this land was taken from tribes who had fought against the Crown, but some was taken from hapū who had not done so. They were penalised because they lived in an area where most Māori had been opponents of the Crown.
