As in New Zealand’s Labour and National political parties, women were a minority in the Communist party. Among the half-dozen women in this photograph of the 1948 conference were Connie Birchfield (back row, fourth from right), Rona Bailey (second row, far right), Connie Purdue (second row, sixth from left) and Rita Smith (second row, seventh from right). They were active in many of the campaigns for women's rights.
