Kōrero: Government and industrial development

Wellington harbour, around 1851

Wellington’s harbour was one of New Zealand’s best, and its development started early in the European settlement period. This map from around 1851 shows the proposed land reclamation (the pink shaded area) planned by Acting Colonial Engineer Edward Roberts. Government engineers played an important part in industrial development. Employed by central, provincial and local government, they were responsible for planning, coordinating and overseeing the building of all kinds of infrastructure.
