Kōrero: Suburbs

Early Wellington suburbs

This panorama of 1880s Wellington, taken from Mt Victoria, shows the suburban pattern of low-rise single- or double-storey houses, mostly on their own sections, already well established. The flat areas and moderate slopes of Newtown (upper left), The Terrace (centre back), Thorndon (upper right) and Oriental Bay (lower right) were handy to the city centre and the earliest to be developed.
