Modern motorists would recognise the routes on this map from the 1890s – many major roads had been built or surveyed by this time. However many roads were unmetalled, and travelling times between towns were mostly given in days rather than hours. Methods of transport listed include buggy, coach, horseback, steamer, canoe and foot.
