Building large mines required mechanical and civil engineering expertise, and used equipment made by manufacturing engineering companies. The Phoenix gold mine in Bullendale, Central Otago, was the first to add electrical engineering to the mix, constructing a hydroelectric station to power its quartz-crushing battery stampers.
