J. McDowell and Co. operated a drapery in the 1870s on the corner of Lambton Quay and Willis Street in Wellington – still a well-known shopping spot. There were very few industries in early colonial New Zealand, and almost all of the produce sold in shops was imported, mostly from Britain.
