In the early 20th century, publications for tourists often presented the New Zealand bush as romantic, not hostile. The arresting page design which frames this image of Waipapa Creek in the Hokianga is from a 1925 guidebook by Richard Wedderspoon. Published by the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts, it had the revealing title of The New Zealand illustrated tourist guide: the most wonderful scenic paradise in the world.
