This is the second edition of the chart of New Zealand created by Thomas McDonnell and James Wyld, published in 1839 (the first was published in 1834.) There are some interesting errors, some of which (such as the Bay of Taranaki) had appeared on earlier maps. It also includes some new mistakes, such as the large inlet ‘Knowsley River’ on the Southland coast, and the connection of Doubtful Sound with Dusky Bay. For the first time a large inland lake, possibly Lake Wakatipu, is depicted in Otago. From 1840, reprints included three more insets, one showing the site of the Treaty of Waitangi signing, and the proposed town of Victoria on the Waitangi peninsula.
