Kōrero: Lifesaving and surfing

‘On surfari’

From the early 1960s, many keen surfers began travelling around New Zealand in search of good surfing beaches – a phenomenon known as ‘going on surfari’. The classic 1960s surf film Children of the sun follows the travels of keen surfers and gives a sense of the surfing culture that emerged during that decade, based on international trends but with a local twist. The contempt for convention and love of freedom are conveyed in this clip from the film.
