In 2017, RainbowYOUTH launched a campaign to encourage people to realise the importance of language and its sometimes harmful effect on the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer community, with this advert directed at those who use the word 'gay' as an insult. Set up in Auckland in 1989, RainbowYOUTH first focussed on creating safe spaces, peer-support and social activities for young gay and lesbian people, and while retaining these functions, also grew into providing education programmes, counselling and advocacy for young people around the country.
