Gloss was a 'glitter-soap.' The series was first conceived by producer Janice Finn in 1985, in the heady days of Rogernomics (the new-right economic changes of the Labour government) and a booming share market, when urban high living was taking off, especially in Auckland. It concerned a wealthy family, the Redferns, and their high-fashion magazine edited by smart yuppie Maxine Redfern (Ilona Rodgers). Rosemary McLeod wrote the initial concept and James Griffin prepared the scripts. By the time the 55 50-minute episodes screened, from 1987 to 1990, the stockmarket boom was over, but the excesses and melodrama of the show made Gloss popular viewing.
