Kōrero: Experimental film

Fred O'Neill, Plastiphobia, 1962

Video file

Dunedin-based Fred O’Neill began making his short, plasticine-based animations in the late 1950s. Plastiphobia was made in 1962 – it may have been one of several commissioned for television and made by the National Film Unit. It is a clever film, but is based on well-recognised techniques, so whether it is 'experimental' in a formal sense is an open question.
