Peter Beaven was among Christchurch's leading modernist architects. He distinguished himself by his whimsical designs, including the Lyttelton Road Authority Building. It was constructed in the brutalist idiom of modernism and featured sculptural, nautical-like forms. This led to the building being dubbed Canterbury's 'fifth ship' – a reference to the first four ships that brought settlers to the region in 1850. This clip is from the 1984 television series The elegant shed, narrated by Auckland architect David Mitchell. The building was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and was subsequently demolished.
