Dance was an important part of the 150th anniversary celebrations for the Bohemian settlement of Pūhoi, north of Auckland. The Auckland Provincial Council encouraged Martin Krippner to organise the settlement by offering a 40-acre (16-hectare) land grant for each adult immigrant and a 20-acre (8-hectare) grant for children over five years of age. The first settlers arrived in 1863, bringing their rich traditions with them, and these survived into the 21st century.
