National Youth Orchestra

The National Youth Orchestra was founded in 1959 by John Hopkins, principal conductor of the National Orchestra. This film shows Hopkins and the orchestra practising and performing Mikhail Glinka's Russlan and Ludmilla overture in 1960. At that time participants had to be 21 or younger. In the 2000s the upper age limit was 25.
