Opening of Te Papa

On 14 February 1998 the new Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa was officially opened on Wellington's waterfront. The opening completed over a decade of planning and construction. This film clip shows the ceremony on that day, beginning with the arrival of waka (canoes) at dawn, a procession to the marae led by Governor-General Paul Reeves, a speech by Prime Minister Jenny Shipley and the formal declaration of opening by two representatives of the younger generation, Tama Whiting and Grace Sweeney, accompanied by famous yachtsman Peter Blake.
