As the first major settlement in the world to see the sun rise on the new millennium, Gisborne had a major celebration. Watch this footage of the people gathered on Midway Beach watching the sun rise, and the festivities that followed. The Gisborne event was broadcast around the world. Internationally famous opera singer Kiri te Kanawa, as home-town girl, was the starring performer.
