Jane Campion's The piano reached the pinnacle of success for cinema worldwide, winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes and three Academy Awards (Oscars). One of those, for best supporting actress, went to 11-year-old Lower Hutt girl Anna Paquin – her acceptance speech was a further unforgettable performance. International stars Holly Hunter (who won a best actress Oscar), Harvey Keitel and Sam Neill played the main adult roles. Some New Zealanders, such as Cliff Curtis, played smaller roles, then went on to international success. In 2013 The piano's director and writer, Jane Campion (whose screenplay won the film's third Oscar), revealed that she had originally intended Hunter's character to die at the end of the film, but lost her nerve during shooting.
