Geoff Murphy's apocalyptic thriller The quiet earth, adapted from Craig Harrison's novel, was New Zealand's first major science-fiction film. It is notable for a stunning lead performance by Bruno Lawrence, who began working with Murphy as part of a Hawke's Bay-based film-making collective, later moved to Hollywood to work as an action-movie director.
