Kōrero: Feature film

The quiet earth, 1985

Geoff Murphy's apocalyptic thriller The quiet earth, adapted from Craig Harrison's novel of the same name, was New Zealand's first major science-fiction film. It is notable for a stunning lead performance by Bruno Lawrence, who began working with Murphy as part of a Hawke's Bay-based film-making collective that included cinematographer Alun Bollinger and writer-director Martyn Sanderson. After making The quiet earth Murphy left New Zealand to work as an action-movie director in Hollywood.
