Kōrero: Beauty contests

Miss New Zealand, 1973

Video file

Miss New Zealand compere Colin Lehmann interviews Miss Otago, Pamela King (the eventual winner), during the 1973 Miss New Zealand contest. At the time contestants were interviewed in swimsuits, something contest detractors particularly disliked. The platform shoes popular in the 1970s made the walk down to the microphone challenging – King was not the only contestant who kicked the microphone stand that year.
