Kōrero: Cooking

Home science at the University of Otago, 1961

Video file

The first courses in home science at the University of Otago started in 1911. During the 50th-anniversary celebrations, former students visited the new home-science building and reflected on the more primitive conditions in which they learned in the early days. By 1961 the graduates could expect to forge professional careers using their qualification – in 1911 their skills were more likely to be applied in the home only.
